The Week Ahead (12-16 February 2018)

In our pursuit to making rights real, we bring to you our plans and activities for the week. This is done, in so that the public, media and our partners are always aware of our cases and advocacy activities. We hope that this is not only informative but encourages everyone to contribute towards our goal, which is making rights real.

13 February 2018

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) will appear at the Constitutional Court tomorrow in the matter of Rosemary Hunter v the Financial Services Board and others. In this matter LHR represented the CWAO, in a matter were a former FSB employer is challenging the manner in which numerous pension funds were deregistered in an irregular manner. CWAO seeks to advance legal arguments setting out the FSB's constitutional responsibility to investigate irregularities in the cancellation of pension funds in an effort to ensure pensioners are able to claim their benefits.

14 February 2018

Our Strategic Litigation team will be attending the #Righ2Protest Steering Committee Meeting at the University of Witswatersrand. The meeting allows for the national coordination of protest related work by a number of civil society organizations and independent practitioners.

Our Gender Equality Programme will attend the launch of a research report by the National Shelter Movement of South Africa and the Heinrich Boll Stiftung. The report is titled, “Housing Women who Have Experienced Abuse: Policy, Funding and Practice”. The event takes place at the Saartjie Baartman Centre.

Later on the same day, the Gender Equality Programme in partnership with the Dullah Omar Institute will host a meeting to reflect on the impact of our joint #NotOurLeaders 16 Days of Activism Campaign from 2017.

Our Pretoria Law Clinic will also be attending the Tshwane Child Protection Forum.

15 February 2018

The Gender Equality Programme will put heads together with the Judges Matter campaign for strategic planning for 2018.

 16 February 2018

The Pretoria Law  Clinic will be conducting consultations at the Orange Farm Community Advice Office in collaboration with the Statelessness project.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) is launching a provincial stakeholders land issues forum, our Durban Law clinic will attend the launch with the aim of establishing whether there Is a role we can possibly have within the forum.
